Him and I
He glared at me through bloodshot eyes, which might be rage or age I settled on the latter as I’m something of a sage His hair seemed quite unhappy to be on that awful head I think that’s why I caught him as his hair was being shed He gave a little grimace and I stared in disbelief How can someone so decrepit still have his own teeth The thing sucked in his breath to boost his chest and slim his waist But that showed off his man-boobs and he looked a bit disgraced I’ve been twenty-one for forty years now, give or take But this guy has been ninety since Eve chatted with a snake Everything I saw portrayed a thing besieged by years A thing so wretched that it brought me very close to tears I called out to my wife and I was trying not to weep ‘Darling, when you bought it… was this mirror going cheap?’
