Memorial Day
Memorial Day Poetry Contest Oliver Mckeithan To the many veterans, and regretfully to the many sacrificial lambs of the Viet Nam war my eyes will always tear for you. No medals or rewards. But you were a huge part of the bigger picture-us. You were sent on missions to ferret out the enemy and clear mine fields with little chance of making it back. You greatly held your head up high, and carried out your mission. Quote by author. To the many soldiers who fought for our freedoms With arms and feet, pride and spirit Marching in harmony Marching with conviction Marching wherever you were sent Across the border, across the sea A cross to bear, a flag to hold high A homeland, country, and people to save You never questioned why You followed your commands But mostly your hearts ... In the face of peace You faced the darkness The betrayal, the enemy ... and the eyes of the devil But you held your ground for the more significant cause ... Us, the proud American people and country Some of you made it back Some did not Some were fresh out of high school And put their country first And their future second Yet all had one thing in common Bravery and, unfortunately for some, sacrifice That took the baton from all the soldiers who fought And spilled and left their blood on all the battlefields From the Civil War, and regretfully on and on ... for us Without these brave soldiers, and men ... you ... we would have lost And our flag replaced And God forbid our lives uprooted Yes, tearfully, a horrifying thought to think As I reflect on this day with a heavy heart And watch the newscast honoring the fallen and brave men ... you My eyes do tear for you And my heart salutes you, the brave men and soldiers Including our allies Those who fought for our freedom And our nestled way of life Thank you, sincerely
