I Let It Slip Away
I let it slip away…. But can I ever do it? One long year has passed since I last saw her, With her smiling face and sparkling eyes. Memories haunt me of the days we were together, When she whispered love’s veiled message, With haunting echoes faintly singing. My world then opened into a dreamscape. Together we sat by the side of a jumping cataract, Watching the sunlight dancing through the smoky vapour With every droplet mirroring a spectrum of shades And dreamt of a time when we would be man n’ wife Never knowing she would vanish out from my sky like a rainbow. She was a candle that glowed luminous, Emitting undeniable light of love and warmth Who shone in my world like the light of a harvest moon, A creeper, I thought, would twine round me as on a tree. Now, as I see the homing bird coming to join its mate, And listen to the notes of a nightingale from the deserted wood, I think of her and slip into an abyss of agony and longing, With waves of commotion swirling in my head, And see my sky suddenly turning stygian black. When the setting sun in its twilight glows When the waning day’s last glorious rays enclose I seek her in the hovering silence and seclusion of life, And wonder if love adrift and lost in the air, Would return once more to alight my shattered heart! Sometimes I think I would be better off Without those memories that impair my senses, When a gloomy haze overshadows my world. I can’t deal with these feelings of gloom anymore. So, I let them slip away forever….! _____________________ April.27.2023 ~ Placed First~ I Let it Slip Away Poetry Contest Sponsor- John Lawless
