Goliath's Sword
I was the Champion's companion, Always close by my master's side; The one that helped him to victory Which filled me with great pride. Together we were triumphant, Ever conquering all our foes. Glory and honour shone on us - I'm so pleased it was me he chose. Then, one day, my master Challenged Israel to produce their best, A worthy warrior who could contend And step up to the contest. Yes, the winner of that battle Would have the opposers as his prize, All would be his servants, And his fame would reach the skies. Out from the crowd came a youth, His appearance was quite plain And, with no sword or armour, What could he expect to gain? My master roared with laughter, And strongly cursed that boy Who said his God would give victory, And the Philistine army destroy. So, the youth ran across the field With a sling in his hand And came much closer To where Goliath did stand. From his bag he took a smooth stone And slung it with great force! Could it be that his God Guided it right on course? That giant felt the stone Sink deeply into his forehead And my master crashed, face down, It seemed that he was dead. Standing above him that youth Took me into his hand, And severed his head from his body, The victory was truly grand. From that moment on I felt utterly disgraced And into confinement I was duly placed. No longer do I shine, Pride truly comes before a fall; A fool I was to trust in man, The God of love, conquers all.
