Winter's Gifts
Cloud covers swept over us Receded then came again I looked at the lulls and gusts Then gripping the wheels refrain Signs loomed out of the darkness, Warning of “potholes ahead”. I mused over the message’s starkness, Just think what the cold and road had bred! On-coming headlights showed Swift currents of snow crossing the way. Then large swirls flew up from the road, “Stay the course and resist the sway.” Others’ tracks vanished in the winds fray. I looked at the odometer and did the math. Forests, snow, but no sign of moose, overall, a good day. We would give thanks, knowing we withstood winter’s wrath. Once home, we looked inside. Tasks accomplished. Grateful to be home at last. The fierce gales subsided. The winter’s storm had lied. We repeated the songs and prayers of journeys past. Then as fatigue engulfed us, we set all aside.
