Finding the Perfect Christmas Tree
"Daddy, when are we going to the woods to find a Christmas tree? You promised I could help pick the most prettiest one." "Yes, my darling, Ellie. I didn't forget." "Can we go now, Daddy? Can we, P L E A S E?" "Hmmmm. We'd better see if Mommy is ok with us going without her and your new baby brother. It'll be too cold in the forest for them. Go and ask her if that's ok." "Ok, Daddy, but don't leave without me. Promise?" "I promise to stay right here until you get back. You sure make a lot of demands for a six-year-old, kiddo. Now scoot!" "MOMMY! MOMMY! Can me and Daddy cut down our Christmas tree?" "Ellie, I said 'go' and ask her, not scream it down the hall." "I'm sorry Daddy. She didn't answer me, so maybe she and Davey are sleeping, soooooo... can we go now?" "Yes, little Miss Impatient. Put on your coat and boots while I write a note to let Mommy know where we are." "K. Can we get a big tree? One way bigger than you? I think last year's tree was too short. Not much bigger than me!" "Hmmmm, we'll decide that when we get there. If we get one much bigger, we'll need more ornaments to make it look pretty." "Oh, Daddy. We're gonna need more of lots of stuff. I know how to make popcorn, but can you and Mommy help me, cuz I don't know how to put it on strings? And I think we're gonna need more tinsel cuz that makes it looks all shiny. And...." "Whoa there, kiddo. One thing at a time. We have to find a tree first. Next year the four of us will go on a hunt for the perfect tree. Does that sound like fun?" "Yeah, but will Davey know how to walk and talk by then?" He's awful little." "If he's anything like you, he'll be talking plenty. Your baby brother will need your help with lots of things, but before you know it, he'll be running in the snow with you." "I can teach him how to run, but he's gotta learn how to walk first. Now, let's stop talking and get in the truck so we can show Mommy how good we are at picking out the perfect tree. Come on, Daddy. Let's go!"
