How Did That Happen
With icy blue- black eyes and ginger spicy hair Caribbean pirate girl gave off an intimidating air We boys could not help but sit and stare Wishing we did not hunger for a bit of care Her name was unknown, but she was more than fine. I wish she would talk to us, I would make her mine! We laughed at my cousin, so naïve at age nine. Let’s nickname her something; maybe Clementine? She sat on the ship, staring past us, as if we were scum. When those eyes land on me, I feel like yesterday’s bum. She flicked something off her blouse, it was a cupcake crumb. We stared at her as she drank down a flask full of rum. Oh, woe is me, she is beautiful, said many. How old do you think she is? Eighteen or twenty. My cousin Dover at nine was such a ninny. He yelled “How old are you? Eighteen or twenty?” She gave him a wave and invited him over. The rest of us hung off the edge, watching our Dover. How did that happen? Asked another cousin, a thug. When he got over to her, Dover gave us a wave, so very smug.
