I Mind My Own Business But
On the phone again with a neighbor named Dawn What tv station is your television on? That’s a personal question I say in a persnickety way Besides, I don’t have it on, but this I don’t say. I mind my own business, she says, but will you vote? I am irritated now at this butin-skie married to an old goat. That’s my business I say in the meanest way I can. She relays this in a mimicking way to her lay-about man. I hear you have cancer, she says but is this true? I am horrified, for cancer and I have no connection to do. There goes that gray car, I bet he voted for Trump. I picture her sitting at the window, sitting on her big rump. I mind my own business, she lies, but here’s the thing. The neighbors are out there constructing a green tree swing. Did they get a permit? I had better report them, call the city. Our conversations are rarely upbeat or pretty.
