Hummingbird
As I gaze into the morn A flawless fleck catches my eye. It is a simple hummingbird So complex as it flits and flies, Searching for its next meal– Something simple and sweet. The awe with which this tiny bird Seamlessly moves from place to place Has me mesmerized, And I forget myself as time passes. Frozen I sit, lest movement startles And frightens this tiny yet mighty wonder away. I marvel at the blueprint of God What a fine architect who has created creatures, Great as a whale and small as a hummingbird. What wisdom He must have, Large and simple, small and complex All have a place and purpose. A sigh escapes as I contemplate All that He has done, And in that moment, the hummingbird hastens away, Startled at my slight sound. Though I’m saddened that it has gone, I shall never forget the depth of thought Brought about by the tiny, flawless fleck That caught the corner of my eye On a simple summer morn. 2022 Marathon Mile 2 Poetry Contest Mark Toney June 15, 2022
