Ramblings of Home
I travelled back to a distant sun and moon upon the two isles in the Caribbean Sea - from the dry in March to the rains in June to fill of the red rum and guava jelly. Back to tread island sands in timeless change and gaze on peaks and valleys for dear sake - over El Cerro del Aripo high on the range to the mud volcano and black Pitch Lake. To follow my footsteps and its drumbeats and walk the lanes and hedgerows of old time. Where as a boy we played in the streets - from St Clair Ave to Tragarete Road we’d lime and over wall and fence and tree did climb. Back to where old flying boats in Staubles Bay last flew its sunlit skies from sea to shore - where over deep gulf and reef dives the osprey and Admiral Nelson sailed his man o’ war. Out of Scotland Bay under calm wind and sail to crystal pool blue grotto caves in Gasparee, and catch a pirogue on long adventure trail past the old island penal and leper colony. To follow my footsteps and its drumbeats and walk the lanes and hedgerows of old time. Where as a boy we played in the streets – from St Clair Ave to Tragarete Road we’d lime and over wall and fence and tree did climb. Written: September 1996
