Falling In Love With a Hippie In June 1969
Her sign said, “New York or Illinois”. He stopped immediately, and she climbed in. Her smile was honest, immediate and amazing. She was dressed in a long three-tiered skirt. She had a ring for each finger, and an ankle bracelet. Her toes had popped out of her flat sandals. Her hair was as wild as a fighting grizzly bear. She told a few stories, and then she asked about him. He was not usually a talker, but they had a five-hour trip. He opened up and told her everything he knew about himself. Actually, he told her more than he knew that he knew about himself. He was totally in love by the time he got her to Illinois. Two states away from where he had planned to drive that day. He actually kept driving and took her to New York. It was the least he could do for himself.
