A Voice In the Night
Walking in the evening dark, enclosed by night I hear it sometimes in the stillness Whispers come to me borne on the wind Just soft hints of a voice or do I imagine No words as such, a touch of something to my ears Possibilities of a sentence, made from air I listen, trying to grasp the intent, the meaning It evades me though, like grasping water Like a mist it flows past, no substance I am left with no understanding just a feeling Almost like a dream, I know I had it yet the content lost The more I concentrate the more nebulous it becomes Until it is gone, vanished, expunged I wish I could know it’s meaning, it’s message Then comes suspicion, I look around, straining at each sound Seeing nothing I return to the lights of my refuge Left with an underlying loss, is this important Will I learn the need of this sensation? One day perhaps
