Dealing With Grief
Dealing with Grief A lady friend of mine was trying to deal with the loss of both parents as well as her Husband all pretty much at the same time. She was having real difficulty dealing with it. So I suggested that she attend a grief counselling class. She said she would if I would go with her for support and so I did. There were 20 people in the class and the lady running things asked each person to stand and tell the class what they were going through. The purpose of this exercise was to let each person realize there are people out there who's problems just might be worse than what you are going through, and they were since each one that spoke was worse than the last. I am not going to go through them all but I will mention the one that touched me the most. A young lady about 35 told of a fire in an old Victorian home that housed her entire family. Mother, Father, Brothers, Sisters Aunts and Uncles as well as Grandparents. All lost in the fire while they slept. Dealing with the grief she said changed her personality, It got to the point that her Husband could no longer take it and he walked out. Her grief caused her to miss so many days from work that they fired her as well. The entire class gasped, astonished by what they had just heard. I'm sure it showed them that their troubles were small in comparison even though theirs was just as painful. After everybody had told their story the lady who ran the class pointed to me and said, what's your story I explained that I was just here supporting my friend but I asked if it was OK for me to say a few words? She said yes and here's what I told the class. I have been sitting here for the past hour listening to all of you and I can see how fragile everybody is and a thought came to mind. Yes you are all very fragile but it's not the end but the beginning of your healing. The most fragile thing in this world is a snowflake. You can't even hold it in your hand. So all of you are like the fragile snowflake. However we all know what the fragile snowflake can do when they stick together. So my advice to you is stick together, become friends, share your phone numbers and Emails. Stick together and it will make you powerful in your grief. Share things that helped you, turn bad days into better days by calling on your snowflake friends and you will get stronger everyday and help each other through this. God bless all of you.
