Elf On the Shelf
No one suspected or may have expected As it was mind-boggling to even conceive Of events to transpire that night by the fire On a cold wintry Christmas Eve. The Elf on the shelf was left by himself And shenanigans were quick to ensue. With the family asleep... he made not a peep And was eager for a deception or two. He was bored... being confined to a drawer, For how long... he was unable to tell. But this dissatisfied Elf... now back on the shelf Was giving thought to the stockings and bells. "They will rue the day when they stuffed me away," Said the Elf with revenge as his goal. He lowered his talking knowing all of their stockings Would now be filled with the darkest of coal. He was quick to conclude to the most foul of moods And teach a lesson on Christmas Eve night. "I will bring an infusion of my own brand of confusion by causing a little Yuletide strife." He placed tacks on the floor...tacks by the door. He placed tacks on the seat of their chairs. He thought it a hoot... to place tacks in their boots. He placed tacks on each step of the stairs. His heart was aflutter covering the door knobs with butter And filling each shoe with sticky white rice. He succumbed to the wish to place stinky old fish To attract hordes of ravenous mice. He put soot on the rug and released a few bugs To itch and creep up the windows and walls. And honey on the floor was a paradisiacal chore As he raced through the kitchen and halls. He giggled with glee removing lights from the tree And slyly smirked at each bulb that he broke. He thought himself clever when he decided to sever A few tree limbs before the family awoke. He took an ornament here and a ornament there And mischievously caused them to drop. He was maliciously pursuing the families undoing And there was no one to force him to stop. He was deliberate of thought... he'd never be caught, After all... it was just a measure of fun. When a voice from behind... sounding gracious and kind. "Oh my dear Elf... what have you done?" The Elf stood his ground and turned right around And laid his eyes on the most imposing of sights. With his desire for stress... to cause quite a mess, He had forgotten this was Santa's big night. "You must have a reason for disturbing the season," Said Santa for the Elf to explain. "Things cannot be so dire... let us sit by the fire And tell me the source of your mischief and pain." "I'll have nothing to do when Christmas is through," Replied the Elf to the question directed. "I will be shoveled away for a great many more days Where I will feel betrayed and rejected. "I'm troubled to learn this well founded concern And admit your job comes with a horrible price. But at this time of year... I need you right here To tell me who's been naughty or nice." "I understand what you say," said the Elf in dismay. "But I'm so tired of being left all alone. If I had the choice," he said in a heartbroken voice. "If I may... I just want to come home." Santa chuckled... grabbing hold of his buckle And was moved by what the Elf had to say. "There's no reason to linger," and with a snap of his fingers And now smiling... the Elf vanished away. Santa looked around... at the mess he had found And twinkled his nose to undue all the Elf had undone. And then he too melted away... to join the Elf in the sleigh To finish their work before the rise of the sun. So my dear friends... there is no need to portend As Christmas is a time of wonder and joy. But be not too scared when your Elf is not there. He has gone with Santa to deliver the toys.
