No Message From Dad
I have a collection of sorts. It’s not the kind of collection you will find on a shelf or copied in a book or arranged on paper. It’s a collection of voices. I keep one voice message from each person important in my life. When I was 40, my best friend died by suicide. It was devastating. After she passed, I would call her phone just to hear her voice. Then her husband took her number and changed the message, and I lost her all over again. From that point on, I started keeping messages from my favorite people--my mom, my husband, my son, my aunt, my sister--but the one voice I don’t have is my dad’s. He didn’t ever really call if he wanted to talk. He just waited for you to visit and said what he needed to say. Of course, the one important voice I didn’t collect belongs to the one important person in my life who died. I don’t have the luxury of listening to him when I miss him. It’s the one regret I have, the fact that I have no message from Dad. Voices of loved ones Bring comfort in troubled times No message from Dad
