Towards the Waterfall
She wound her way as was her wont, Along the treacherous path Adorned by rock, and roots and ferns, Elated as if there was a fire dance in the breeze, Towards the lake and the waterfall. Soon she arrived at the appointed tryst. Beneath the low cliffs, the small lake beckoned. From above torrents of water Tumbled down, cascading into the languid lake. How cool the waterfall as heat poured down Into the blazing valley All was quiet except for Dancing kingfishers hurtling here and there, And the sonorous symphonic melody Of the falling waters from above. Suddenly a mist swirled momentarily Around the edge of the lake where she stood. She blessed the mist with all her might. Unexpectedly he rose from beneath the waters, Giving her a delightful sudden fright. Her love had arrived in a shimmering enchantment, Splashing water, causing quick fading rainbows As he treaded the water of the small lake. In that mist, they embraced, a caress that felt Like a soft breeze intoning a wistful song, A sonata of dreams and yearns and love. Suddenly he disappeared as the mist lifted. The kingfishers made a higher pitched sound. Sadness engulfed her as the sound of the water Seems to increase in its fall. Tears fell Down her haggard cheeks, but she stood tall, She stood in the cool water. Her wet white sari Clung to her. She sobbed, then stopped. As water from above hit the lake A rainbow formed. Finally, she felt at peace. 23 November 2021 Theme No. 6: Waterfall ''W'' New Poems Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Constance La France
