Other Nights
In the middle of each and every night, I have a rendezvous It isn’t with my husband, but with you … my son with you The time it varies night tonight, the length changes too And often in the darkened hours I wonder … what to do What can I do each time you wake, so I can see you smile Keep you warm, keep you dry, love and feed you … for a while But then, there are these “Other nights” when nothing that I do Seems to give you comfort, and nothing … pleases you! The minute's changes to hours, your whimper to a cry Darkened room see the morning what else … is there to try? I’m so tired and sleepy, all night I’ve cared for you Then I hear a welcomed whisper, “Is there something … I can do?” I’d hate to ask or to impose, but I would almost beg Could you hold him till he sleeps, so I can go … to bed? Yes, they're bound to be nights, the ones called, “Those Others.” When the arms that he’ll want, will be Daddy’s ... not Mothers
