Yancey Railroad
I was young – no more than twenty Just a child in the minds of most nations Even back then, I believe I had plenty There was hope and grace in my foundations Even at that age, I knew I was being given A moment in history, a memorable time My young husband was definitely driven And he, too, was healthy – in his prime We were given the opportunity to deliver All the cars left of the Yancey Railroad To a working railroad positioned downriver Where they could be used and not corrode This was the final trip of the Yancey railroad And I didn’t have a doubt history we’d be making There was a gentle feel as the engine pushed the load Leaving my thoughts on the verge of heartbreaking It was a bittersweet day in the history of those cars As they traveled toward Clenchfield and their ending This was a time to add to our journals – our memoirs Even if the loss of this old railroad was so heartrending One last journey along the iron rails Would lead to the final trip of this train Where they would reach a place of tales Told to those who would ride without constrain Poignant and nostalgic, reflections of the South Colored in hues of warm memories and grace Brought to life by those who used word of mouth To agree that the Yancey Railroad we did displace Yancey Railroad Railroads, A Historical Glance Back Poetry Contest Sponsored by: BJ Legros Kelley October 13, 2021
