Child of Autumn
It’s autumn, and the a wafting odor of burning leaves Takes me back to my childhood filled with Hayrack rides and bonfires and good times with family and friends. It’s autumn, and I hear the sounds from the nearby High school stadium, the band, the crowd, the cheers And see the Friday night lights as I remember My childhood, going to the games, And playing in the marching band, And going for pizza with friends after a win. It’s autumn, and I drive by fields of browning cornfields Knowing that soon I’ll take a different route to work To avoid the slow moving combines and wagons filled with corn, And I remember as a child riding in the combines and on my grandpa’s tractor And loving the bustling of harvest time on the farm. It’s autumn, and I know that haunted houses are being constructed And corn mazes are being plowed, and straw and hay are being stored And horses are growing their winter coats, And my inner child is grateful to know all of these things first hand Because my parents made sure my childhood was filled with all of these things, And my inner child and I are forever grateful and blessed.
