The Moon
The Moon is often feminine in poetry, Sylvia Plath was heavily influenced by the White Goddess. Lady Mary W Montagu, writes in the ‘Hymn to the Moon’ “The lover’s guardian and the muse’s aid By thy pale beams I solitary rove, To thee my tender grief confide; Serenely sweet you gild the silent grove My friend, my goddess and my guide…” And for Emily Dickinson The moon was but a chin of gold, “and now she turns her perfect face Upon the world below,” Like Lady Godiva, Goddess Selene sits astride the gleaming silvery steed wrapped in a warm glow of white fire and rides across the sky. She is the muse of the poet, Tethered to the spirit of the sea, A sparkling beacon in the night for two hearts lost in love. Fickle, whimsical, mysterious like a coy maiden She often hides behind the veil offering teasing glimpses to charm the lovelorn souls. ~Contest: Is the Moon male or Female ~Sponsor: Chantelle Anne Cooke.
