The Window
Never did I regard windows as I do now I learnt much of these things these past two years We speak of windows to the soul, windows with a view These glass covered eyes, if only they could speak I came to know some very well They watched me as the seasons came and went As I looked out of them, gazing at the world outside Often lost, adrift in my thoughts The day we met, the family moved in My wife to the bed, our children claiming chairs, me taking her side as mine The windows accepted us as if they understood They offered us light, such a view of the world By night they reflected the story inside Seeing each of us in the tableau we made, games, laughing, talking Becoming a mirror for us to see Offering back to us each event By day they showed us sun, rain, snow, all the time protecting us Giving us space, comfort, light even hope Projecting images of a world like a film A backdrop to our lives They gazed upon each drama, each moment of joy They lit the room when needed and darkened it when required Always there, letting us have our time as outside they showed The passing of the world My last image at the end as I finally closed the door As my children held me tight Was the window, sun streaming down to an empty bed And to the window I nodded a heartfelt thanks 2014
