The Visit
It has been awhile, since I have visited the grave; of my big sister, father and mother, and my sweet baby boy ! The path has cracks and is dangerously uneven, scattered are toppled headstones here and there; and damaged steps and rails, well, it is an old cemetery but it seems forgotten ! As I walk along, I recall the memories I hold close; of each loved one engraved in stone here, that I am about to visit ! Then, I am there at the once shiny black stone gazing, for it is covered with green moss and bird droppings; and I am filled with horror, oh guilt, oh why has it taken me so long to visit ! I walk around it, the moss is on both the sides and back; covering the scroll work and baby's name, the front has a little but not as bad ! Along the bottom it has grown up quite a bit, and I fall to my knees weeping, mom, dad so sorry; then, I feel hands caressing my hair, and mom is whispering to me, but it is not words of love ! but ... Come back tomorrow, with Dawn soap and a sturdy brush; and bring a buck for water and wear gloves, I lift my head surprised ! ___________________ June 18, 2021 Poetry/Verse/The Visit Copyright Protected, ID 6-1365-305-18 All Rights Reserved, 2021, Constance La France Written for the Premier contest, Surprise Me sponsor, Charles Messina, Judged 07/03/2021 Second Place
