Get Over Yourselves
GET OVER YOURSELVES In the beginning, the biblical poets had the creator declare “I am that I am!” Later in the text, the biblical poets had the creator command with authority and grace “Be still and know that I am God!” In a subsequent testament, the biblical poets had a nervous population once loudly acclaim “hosanna”, “hallelujah” in a moment that promised liberation, salvation, an eternity of peace Millennia later, after a violent evolution of the human condition, the biblical poets and their clerical descendants gave voice to the people demanding of the creator: “What about us and where have you been?” Eventually fed up with the wailing and whining, with humanity’s longing for preferential treatment and its perpetual obsession with the impossible concept of life after death, the creator responded, its profound ambivalence about the cosmic anomaly that had somehow become an ambiguous miracle, evident in the tone of its voice: “What I am about is not about you! You and your kind are a passing predicament, a micro-discussion, an unfortunately sentient bio-geo-chemical accidental aberration in the eternal and infinite realm of my laws! Your sense of well-being is regrettably guided by supplications and prayers to gods and to ghosts, to apparitions and shadows with the powers and prerogatives of mean desert kings from a time long ago! All you’ve ever needed is a reverence for life as the embodiment of soul and the spiritual animation of ecology and community, of essence and place, on earth and beyond, and a common-sense love born of mutual respect and cautious gratitude for an undeserved gift so eminently bounteous, beautiful and beneficent that ‘shepherds’ and ‘stewards’, ‘guardians’ and ‘healers’, and ‘grateful caretakers’ are words that should define the principal activities of clamorous humankind! But everlasting life in the self-aware format that your species enjoys? I just don’t see how! Be assured of this fact: You are recently arrived and soon to be gone when your small solar source implodes on itself leaving earth and its siblings simply empty and dark. Please understand that I AM what I AM! I AM ALL THAT THERE IS AND EVER WILL BE! And I may call on you, but I am not about you as a specific creation to be guided and protected and eternally mine! Get over yourselves and find a good way in the time that you have! And get over me! Tell those biblical poets to do everyone a favor and just leave me alone!”
