At Last
There he was so tall and strong, Those twinkling blue/grey eyes. His smile made all around her fade. She couldn't stop the sighs, That welled up now within her, As he walked into the room. She felt if he but looked her way, She'd fall into a swoon. She'd seen him oft around the school, Admired him from afar. He saw her too, a smile, a nod, Then gone, that was 'bout par. She watched him now as he came in, Was greeted by his friends; So confident and self assured, How easily he blends, In any place, with any crowd, She wished she was like him. Then maybe he would notice her. She thought those chances slim; But as she stood there watching him, She found him looking back. He smiled and came toward her, And chills ran down her back. He introduced himself to her, And asked her for her name. He asked if she would like to dance. Her voice she feared was strained. He gently took her hand in his, And led her to the floor, And after for refreshment, To the punch bowl where he poured, A drink for each of them, And with his friendly smile, He told her how he'd watched her, For such a long, long while. The band struck up another tune, As slow the minutes passed. She couldn't hide a little smile, The tune was called, AT LAST.
