My Career Chose Me
As a girl growing up, I always wanted to be, The finest Teacher, anyone could ever see. I buckled down to studies and kept the focus on my goal, And often caught my practice in the noble Teacher role. I would beat the plants silly when they were late for my class, I would teach enthusiastically using rhymes, music, and dance. My dolls would do their homework and actively participate, But the chairs would get in trouble when they teased their classmates. I was also, Lawyer, Doctor, and Cook for the children I held dear, Somehow, I knew that I would be expected to extend a duty of care. When school was over and the bells began to ring, The class would say their prayers and the school song they would sing. I would pretend to watch the children walk home hurriedly through the lane, And anticipate the next day to play school once again. I grew up to be that teacher I have aspired to be, I have served well but became tired and am now a retiree.
