He Left Me In 1984
He Left Me in 1984 David J Walker He left me everything he had unique the way that fathers Never seem to say Exactly what they mean like I love you He left me with my slice of The sense of guilt Between a father and a son Things not said Things left undone At best, assumption and Hopeful presumption He left me absorbed in The grief of vague questions An empty bank of faith Of long-held belief Replaced with wraith memories He left me letters I still read As If I am still far away in uniform Hungry for news of the day From home Hoping to get there soon Praying it won’t be long He left me at the end of a Phone call Asking if I could come and See him One more time again Soon I said God Bless you and your family He replied The last words between us Before he died He left me in 1984 I was 30 He was 74 I wanted more
