A Christmas Memory
Twas a fortnight before Christmas And my spidey senses were lit. Knowing the bike I so wanted Was to cost quite a bit. Where my hope sprang eternal But then I have to admit. I wasn't too sure If we were needy or rich. So with a merry zip to my step, I tended my chores. In the hope a generous Santa Would return like before. So I tidied my bed And straightened my drawers. I cleaned all my windows And swept dust from my floor. I shoveled the walk And made Father some tea. With the hope a few Elves Would deliver a bike Christmas Eve. I became a boy generous and kind Who was determined to be Not the least bit unpleasant But full of Yuletide glee. Would doing my chores be enough For the bike I desired? Was there more I could do Before my time would expire? I pondered this thought As I made the family a fire. I could do better in school... I could sing in the Church choir. So Christmas Eve was upon me And I went through my list. Had I covered all the corners? Was there something I missed? Would I be rewarded Christmas morning? Would there be some tragic twist? Would there be presents and toys? Would there be a bike in their midst? So I went to my bed With a trepidation quite fraught. A good night's sleep would elude me As I was consumed by the thought. Would I be surprised in the morning For the present I sought? So I lay quiet and uneasy With my stomach in knots. My siblings shook me awake And we flew down the stairs. We went though a flurry of presents As I looked behind the sofa and chair. But there was nothing to see And I became keenly aware... My trials and burdens were for naught As my bike was not there. My mood turned grudgingly sour As I pouted a bit. But knew I was ruining our Christmas So I decided to quit. As the happy spirit of a family you love Causes one to submit. And I happily unwrapped A new catcher's mitt. I look back on this time And I have to relate. You would think the dreams of a child Would have carried more weight. But such are the lessons we learn And such is our fate. Knowing the good things in life Come to all those who will wait. So Merry Christmas to all And let me be perfectly clear. The special present you desire May still show up next year. But if you're not one to tempt fate Then your Father's computer is near And by downloading his browser... You will harness the power of fear. The End *To those who may be interested. I will be posting my cartoon 'Bob's Your Uncle' on my homepage. A new one will appear every second day or so.
