In Search Of
I found it in a small community grocery store. It all started back in March when the quarantine began. We were getting enough of food, toiletries, and water. Our trips were curtailed and the gas prices were dropping. Each time I went to the grocers, they were always out, always. They were out of the one thing that we learned to live without. But obviously everyone desired this one item I could never find. I understood and never doubted why the item was so greatly coveted. So many people were unemployed and at home cooking, drinking, and eating. Schools were closed and kids were being home-schooled and of course, eating. I imagined all the fragrances and aromas flowing from everyone's house but our own. I longed for the bread and biscuit rolls, and the cinnamon rolls covered in sweet brown sugar and lots of walnuts. I was missing my wife's sweet and savory pastries because she lacked this one item. To my long-awaited delight, I finally located the one item I could not find for months. Even so, I was really amused when I reached for that 3-count package of yeast, THE LAST ONE on the shelf. It's also refreshing to know that in these not-so- united, United States, we were at least united in 'home-baking'. 080520PSCtest, Strand Completely New(24), Brian Strand.
