Wednesday Pie
Wednesday Pie Wednesday shows up on the calendar again; Before the end of school a truck comes to a screeching halt At the curb, through snow and rain, Belching out of open side doors a stack of weekly newspapers – Stories of the neighbor’s news - fashion shows – editor’s reviews – Pictures of the local teams, summaries of city council meetings Newly crowned homecoming queens - recipes and local garden tips. So much to do before the news goes out – delivered to every porch - The papers rolled then bound with bands of stretchy green And, if, by some chance, rain falls upon the early twilight The news in bright circulars, ads for help, letters to the editor Crammed into clear sacks now wobbling down the street on two wheels In a rite time honored as newsboys wearing woolen caps Shouting headlines on street corners. One more rite of passage for news day, a resting place past a garden gate, A welcoming front door swings open at a touch With scents of cinnamon rushing out like a news flash; Hot off the press, fresh coffee filling cups - Breaking news! Wednesday’s featured article in bold type! Grammie, editor-in-chief, and her apple pie waiting for release! Every Wednesday my grandmother made an apple pie. Every Wednesday afternoon my aunt and cousins, along with other friends, would arrive for pie and coffee as they took a break from delivering a weekly newspaper. A delicious memory. 7-3-20
