Child of the Savannah
Child Of The Savannah (A Poem by Nwabuisi Chimezie Samuel ) I walked into my youth With bare foot. So I don't lose my way, I memorized his tales. I am in a future, Similar to the past of his own youth. Like the tall palms of the Nile, I fell in denial. As a child, I lived in a land beyond the Rivers A land filled with so much possibilities. I knew no fear, until I became a young man in Africa Something I still don't understand He couldn't conquer poverty because he wore it like royalty So he wished for me to somehow, Bring him victory in a battle he already lost. Oh African Child! Where art thou future? Who knows what you could become ? Or are you just his escape route from POVERTY Like a birthmark, he cursed you with it From his fathers before him, he gave you as a gift; You needed an advantage to put you over in the race to the HILLS. But all he gave you was culture and tradition But you are STUCK! Stuck in his mess, while the world has evolved to greatness Hoping you could somehow clean up his slate. He prayed to gods in his own pathetic state What could have prepared you for this war, Son? The future is bright ?? but the clouds had to be full of rain so it could fall in due season. Oh African Child! Where art thou future? Who knows what you could become ? Oh African Child. Writer: Nwabuisi Chimezie Samuel A Great Voice For Africans
