I Have Been Sitting Here
I've been sitting here, Like a famished and destituted loner, Watching the irrevocable past and the uncertain future, The hands of time moved slower than the snail, As if I'm seeing from the palest abstractions of my thought. I've been sitting here, Like a bereaved mortician, Watching the graves on the ground, Tombstones of women who fought for equality, And men who died in their struggles to be free and independent. I've been sitting here, Like a man with a dead dream, Watching the sun go down in flame on the far horizon, As poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment engulf my people. But I can not sit here anymore, Like a well fed slave or a hungry free man, Watching my people die in vain and pain, And soothe wounds from brutality and humiliation, Africa let's rise and fight. The posterity is becoming blurry, I have risen, It can only take a bullet in the mind just to hold me down, Because in the final review, The only defined shield against death is to live without fears.
