Last Good Days of Innocence
Do you remember the days Before our government showed how inadequate it really was Do you remember the days When you woke up bright and early Fed the kids and went to work Do you remember the days When you would meet up with your friends for a drink Well maybe not Do you remember the days When Asian Americans walked the street without fear Their race of no consequence Do you remember the days When you were obtuse to the tears in society's seams Ah those blissful days Do you remember the days When there was no fear of using too much toilet paper Or spaghetti sauce or eggs Or of being forced to drink goat's milk Do you remember the days Before you realized how little Republicans valued your life What the hell it's only life... get back to work Do you remember the days Before your family came together Listened to each other and realized they liked each other Do you remember the days When Los Angeles was filled with smog Before you could hear a bird sing in Times square Do you remember the days When the news actually reported the facts No me neither Do you remember the days When we had a sane president who cared about an environment That was not filled with dead coral and rising seas Do you remember the days Before you realized how noisy we had become Deafening ourselves to the cries of the poor Their stomachs growling their packed apartments crumbling Those were the last good days of Innocence Yesterday is gone forever I for one am grateful You can no longer claim ignorance This pandemic has exposed all our weaknesses Please I am on my knees Begging everyone around the world Seize this rare opportunity Make tomorrow the world We always dreamed for our children One of equality empathy and love Peace will be our reward 05/01/20 Pick-A-Title, Vol 16 - Free Verse 2 - Poetry Contest Sponsored by Edward Ibeh
