A Novel Bus Ride
A Novel Bus Ride First week of schools' lockdown Got to the terminal in town Surveying the scene around me Detecting a sense of solemnity Got unto the bus quietly The lady in the seat glanced suspiciously Jamming to the side more closely Her head almost out the window I know what she thinking for sure Because it’s on my mind as well But neither of us can tell. No conductor –No jamming no fuss People cautiously slipping into the bus Nobody seem to be bothering With ‘strange’ woman on the sidewalk singing “Corona Corona God go destroy Grenada’ And the bus quietly pulling out Not provoking the coughs under lockdown in the mouth My lady still not turning around And I thinking of doing a sneeze, any sound. ‘Strange’ woman still singing she calypso Pelting lyrics for so “Corona Corona Too much obeah And rapist in Grenada.” Leaving her behind I praying for her mind While others minding their business Sanitizing away the impending crises. With the bus stealthily moving Not a word echoing All the way to Springs I pondering on this new thing Until my time to drop out Just knocking, no shout But where is the tin To drop the money in?
