She was smiles and laughter and some sugar cane. She had a cat named Princess , a dog called Bob, And they lived like royals down that dusty road. If they saw me coming they'd sniff my pockets - Sometimes I had cookies - sometimes a toad. She was my first real friend, that lady of smiles. I knew naught of death until that one of hers, And I cried in the dark until I ran dry. Then I took her pets and called them "my furs". That was long ago and now I have grown old As I struggle some with an oldtimer's pain. I smile when I recall those years with "my furs", And I say, "Thanks", to the lady down the lane. 3-14-20 Contest: The Lady Down The Lane Sponsor" Craig Cornish
