This year the darkness overbears my fragile flame Too many lights have been extinguished Too many hearts broken, too much despair. Perhaps I have simply arrived at an age where The darkness is closer than before perhaps The light seems so far away because too many obscuring shadows lay between. This morning’s solstice moon In her last crescent stood For a few moments in the sky Before the clouds inrushed to block the sight. Before the changing of the day Will come the changing of the night. The year turns and the solstice promises The end of encroaching darkness That threatens to engulf my fragile flame Of hope and need for peace. For some of us, for me, the night seems long.
