Her Deceit
She could not know how they whispered in corners, those scandalous words of her adultery, To her society was oblivious to her deceitfulness, but many knew her secret and word spread like a disease. She could not perceive how events would unfold, or the scandal would break her when her secret was told, To her the world outside her heart did not exist, yet she would see it collapse- she had taken a risk. Her lover now banished and she left with the shame, with a heart that was broken to see happiness never again, To her society judged her evil, shallow-left her with no hope, she knew only one way to end all the pain. They laid her to rest- but nobody came, her husband, her lover, left alone with her shame, Into the heavens there was freedom and light, no longer to live with the shame of her plight. Memories lingered as they spoke of her crime, though it seemed her deceit was forgotten in time, Her gravestone neglected as though she had never existed, And, all because of a love she had not resisted.
