The Owl and the Hawk
The owl and the hawk trapped a mouse on the spot. Both arguing profusely over who got what. An equal distance dictated the dual, Each desiring the mouse, for much needed fuel. ‘I got here first’ said the owl to the hawk, ‘But I’m bigger than you and you are all talk’. Replied the hawk to the owl watching his prey, As the mouse could do little, except just to stay. ‘May I suggest an impasse?’ enquired the mouse, ‘Why don’t you both trundle along to my house? For there’s more of me, enough to go around, At least a dozen or so, of us to be found’. ‘But if we let you go you might not reappear, We’re not about to let you disappear’ said the owl and the hawk, now part of a team A most unlikely partnership it would seem. Their greed was heard by a rumbling sound In the tummies of the birds where the mouse was bound. And so the prospect of food dictated the act As the owl and the hawk created a pact. Following the mouse both the hawk and the owl Kept a watch for predators out on the prowl To safeguard their catch and ensure a fine meal As a dozen mice was a very big deal. ‘Course you will need to be quiet’ the mouse did say ‘As I’m the only one awake, this time of the day For my friends are resting deep underground But I will point to the entrance above the ground!’ The mouse stopped in his tracks, there it was, as he’d said An entrance where both the owl and the hawk could be led. The mouse disappeared, the owl and the hawk followed Hoping a dozen mice might soon be swallowed. A boom reverberated throughout the hole in the ground A most disconcerting, terrifying sound. The darkness confirmed the cause of the boom A door at the entrance affirmed their doom. A flap in the door, far too small for a bird Was big enough for the mouse, to join his herd, As the table was turned on the predators plight As they became the food for the predators that night.
