How Many Deaths
I look back to see how many deaths I’ve faced The dead lie at intervals throughout My life Wisdom tells me to not look back But I can’t keep from turning my head And staring at the separate deaths Some horrifying, others merely sad There are the deaths of sweet promises That were never able to come to completion Simply because the person who promised Was lost amid a world of intoxicating grieving There are the deaths of lost dreams That didn’t live past the moment Leaving me with wounds of yearning Where there should have been ambition There are the deaths of old love stories That couldn’t live through the storms Making me feel like I’d lost all insight Into the wonders of a beautiful soul There are the deaths of friends I’ve loved Who couldn’t really love me back So I left them along the way somewhere Hoping that they would find their heart’s truth There are the deaths of the years past When I was so sure that I would stay that way But found out, on down the road, that I Would change beyond what I could have imagined There are the deaths that were fearful beyond words The ones that took loved ones on to heaven Those are the deaths that I struggle to look at With eyes that truly melt with salty liquid I look back to see how many deaths I’ve faced The many times I’ve grieved throughout And it is all a part of my life Deaths so fatal and real At times, I fall apart
