Mama
I swam around inside her womb Listening to the whispers of her voice As I awaited my time to come The moment of my arrival I lay against her as she fed me Learning to eat of the milky substance Feeling certain that I was loved Without a condition or reason for it I padded around on chubby legs Feeling her grasp when I fell Knowing her kiss against my flesh When I came up with a booboo I went off to school without knowing She cried to herself that I’d grown And soon I’d be learning and going Different places where she wouldn’t be I was in high school before I knew it Spending all my time doing homework Asking her advice for my friend’s hurt And never listening despite my conscious I moved out on my own, self-discovery Learning about paying bills and dating With her calling me on the phone Saying she was always there for me I lived my life and never really noticed When she gave up her own wants for me With each passing year, she did more Providing for me when I couldn’t make it I surprised her with a visit just last week We smiled and glimpsed pieces of ourselves There inside each other’s eyes and embrace Together, we were more than mother and daughter Together, we were best friends, old friends, Two hearts with one purpose, to love each other
