Once a Pawn a Time
My neighbourhood had a Pawnshop, where people brought their treasures. When Lady Luck wasn't smiling, And they were running out of pleasures. The merchandise was varied one of everything, Cameras, antiques, radios and lots of diamond rings. The items all had quality back in the days of old. Before they invented plastic, when a pocket watch was gold. I spent my childhood staring in the window of that shop. Dreaming dreams to match each item, sometimes my heart would stop. The Pawnbroker was a character that the neighbourhood knew well. He'd take your watch when you were broke, thirty days before he'd sell. He'd examine the items you brought in with an educated eye. He'd trade, sell, or pawn, sometimes he'd even buy. His shop was a museum of treasures from the past. When credit cards became the rage, I knew he couldn't last. When people needed money fast they all would visit Lou. Now there's no need for a Pawn Shop, just a credit card will do. The days of the pawn a shop have come and gone that's a natural fact, and like the three balls hanging over the door, Two to one they won't come back. >> I paint pictures with words.
