New Dawn At Dusk
Rigor mortis shivered in frozen soil Four trumpeters bid a farewell to arms The flag was draped around the coffin Speeches salutes medals on uniforms The pastor clicked his heels in reverence No one argued any longer in the end ‘One day you will know that I’m right’ The general had not known any different Stalingrad had left its blazing mark On the time sheet of history and defeat An overcast day for the end of a journey Duty obedience and glory faded away No arguments today for once and for all Pall-bearers found their harsh marching stride Past marble gravestones covered in ivy A survivor of grenades and tank chains When the Swastika had swept foreign lands And young men sacrificed youthful blood ‘How dare you disagree I’ve given it all’ He had led soldiers into premature death Gave orders and followed a hallowed script Not of the bible but the Fuhrer’s Mein Kampf The battle was over as opposition surrendered ‘I have seen it all before and thereafter’ Not a soul in the congregation disagreed As earthworms waited to feed on the feast Poppies would soon take over a small patch Of Lebensraum and tranquil righteousness Chapter and verse brushed over differences And his son wept a lonely compliant tear 16th July 2019
