The Green Beast
My dad loved big cars and had a dark green Ford LTD, it was a giant beast of a car with a huge lazy engine; we called it, "the house on wheels," and gosh it was smooth, like floating and drifting along peacefully on a tranquil lake. It was the biggest and most flamboyant of the Ford cars, bedecked with chrome on the front and a hood ornament; and it was long, real long- two hundred and fourteen inches, I said, "we turn a corner and five minutes later the car turns." That car was dad's pride and joy- he washed and polished it, almost everyday and it gleamed in the sun- it was a beauty; he would take us for a ride and we would just roam the streets, I recall just sinking into the soft upholstery seat cozy like a bed. But in time- rust ate away at the underside creeping upwards, the dark green began to dull and there was an odd engine murmur; but dad kept it,- cherished it for years and years just to look at, that old jalopy sure made him so happy until he gave it away. I will never forget the day it was towed down our quiet street, that was a sad day for dad as we sat together watching it go. ____________________________ July 11, 2019 Poetry/Verse/The Green Beast Copyright Protected, ID 19- 1165-561-02 All Rights Reserved.
