Black Sheep
I was a rebellious, troubled child with a predilection for mischief and was always running away. No halo ever hovered above my head; color me trouble with a capital T! I'd skip school at least twice a week earning stern scolding and repeated beatings, but I didn't care... I engaged in tomfoolery, for in those moments, I was alive. My spirit felt shackled to someone else's rules by a paper-thin chain that I tried my best to break, but they'd just reinforce the weakest link. And yet, I did not bend to conformity or blend into the background like a shadow. I lit a blaze of blinding light and didn't hide it under a bushel. I may have been born helpless, but I was no lamb to be led by a flock mentality. Society's shepherds branded me a black sheep, a reprobate, a rogue, and a scoundrel. But I see it differently, they were trying to standardize and compartmentalize me; but I would have none of it. No one has the right to subjugate or judge me. I answer only to myself, my God and my conscience.
