Mermaid of the Sea
They call me a siren. I glory in it, and swish my tail The water flicks into the air, and the air laughs We are in jaunty moods always, the sea and I. She is my friend, and I, her protector. They blame me for shipwrecks. I do not deny it. For there was that one time. It happened so quickly, and I was merely practicing my craft, not polished, like I am now. My scales were not fully iridescent yet. I was a neonate mermaid. Sadness creeps in when I think of it and the sea splashes a bit higher, reminding me that is over. We are all about today, and the sun is shining. The seagulls are flying happily. Uh-oh. Something just fell off that ship. I think it is a land creature, but a small one. I swim over to take a peek. it is chubby with pink cheeks. It laughs at me. Reaches for me. I am instantly in love with it. I sense sorrow, can hear loudness from the ship. Gulping cries. Realize it is the mother. I call my seagull minion Marge over. She is good at being gentle. She understands, takes the blankets in her beak and flies the neonate back to its mother. I am the mermaid of the sea, and I am mighty. I am warrior-like in the care I give to my creatures. I will fight every day for their freedom, and for today for one second, I was a mother. A mermother. A perfect day! Prayers for the neonate, I think. Prayers for the neonate! The deep sea creatures cheer. No one reads me like they do.
