The Vicious Circle
I met a vicious circle in an alley one dark night. Being just a lowly square, it gave me quite a fright. Minding my own business, I was simply walking home So I had the foolish hope it would leave me alone. It stepped right out before me, a scowl upon its face. Its hands were in its pockets, my heart began to race. Somewhere from the darkness I could hear a child cry And I was thinking to myself, should I fight or fly? It was a vicious circle, of that I had no doubt. I looked about for exits, O but I saw no way out. It growled something at me, words I couldn't catch. Then it lit a cigarette and slowly crushed the match. I was still quite shaken and I tried to back away. I said, "I am quite sorry but I really cannot stay." Reaching out, it grabbed me, its movements very quick. I thought that I had reached the end, I felt I would be sick. It pulled me right up next to it. I smelled its awful breath. In its steely eyes I was sure I saw my death. Then it smiled an evil grin. I felt my knees go weak. And spitting out the cigarette, it began to speak. It said, "I am a circle, and vicious, it is true. But I'm not going to rob you. I've better things to do." I just stood there, speechless, not knowing what to say. Then the vicious circle winked at me and, laughing, walked away.
