The Freedom of Marshall Gray
‘Twas the days of the ruling Queene Tyrannical land of frost borne shade Whilst a man in foresight seen A slaving soul humble and gay A man called Marshall Gray His lectures soaring in solid sound Come once and every day Spoken wisdom to the folks of the town Many an ear Marshall found. ~ Why in this way we live, He would say As a people, we should be equal and free In a colorful land, we are governed by grey As a peasant, the Queene will not see A request of complaint from me A tax to bare children is to far to go The Queene must sign some relief To free us from burden, to grow No more taxing, the Queene must know. ~ One day in the eve as Marshall Gray spoke The guard stole upon the crowd The Queene swayed in to address the folk Marshall Gray I hear of everyday, very loud Surely, this man and you all are proud On this night, this crowd will be free I give to your children the fields you have plowed On silver platters I bestow upon thee The heads of you all, for everyone to see.
