No More Me
The day it died No-the day I died It was beautiful Sunlight gleaming Across windshields Casting shade on blacktop Birds singing in trees Leaves trembling in the breeze Urban landscape Somehow exotic Both familiar And somehow alien I recall the foul stench of construction The gentle laughter of a child And a random cellphone ring Kind of off topic But is there a right day to die? Nobody pictures The vibrancy of life When discussing a grisly death But I think it shows one thing Death is never far from life And life continues as if to spite death Somehow in this duality I found myself on that street Enveloped by the beauty Of that sunny day With music blasting I barreled down the sidewalk A real man on a mission In my blue and gray uniform My hair neatly combed With a slight waddle From being overweight I oozed confidence Eyes flashing charisma Like the lights glaring at me The honk of the horn And it all went black A deeper black than I've ever known On this sunny and beautiful day My world went black No more thoughts No more crippling self-doubt Nor self-assured walk No more work No more bills No more happiness No more sorrow No more me Except for a snippet on the nightly news Living on as a memory Good night sweet prince
