The Discouraged Soldier
THE DISCOURAGED SOLDIER I stood there on the battlefield as a soldier brave and true, I tried to be so brave like them, but I became so blue As I saw soldiers fall behind and quit the battle cry, And I began to ask myself what was the reason why. I thought these people were so strong and never call it lost, But one by one they left the cause, said it was not worth the cost. “I might as well give up now, too,” I found myself then say As sunset loomed there in the sky of yet another day. But then I saw my Captain there so wounded from the war, And yet was willing to go out and fight again once more. I knew how much He had endured: rejection by His own, And crucified upon a cross and left there all alone. He did not give up, hanging there, until the war was won, And, “It is finished” was His cry when the battle all was done. I went back to the battle field determined to fight more Until the victory cry is heard and all life’s battles o’er.
