The Moon Waxes and Wanes
When did the moon first emerge on high? A cup of wine in hand, I ask the blue sky. The lunar palace is fairly bright; I don’t know what is the date there tonight. I want to get there riding the wind, But fear that the heavenly jade palace Stands too high above and excessively frigid. I’d rather dance with my shadow in the moonshine; It’s more enjoyable to live a mortal life of mine. The moon hovers over the vermilion pavilion, Hangs at the carved window, And shines on me. It shouldn't have any resentment. But why does it wax full when we are separated? Mortals are bound to experience joys and sorrows, And the moon waxes and wanes. Since ancient times things have been far from perfection. Living far apart,I wish everyone good health And a good view of the same full moon. (Tran.)
