Do Not Hang Up On a Computer
We are happy to let you know that you have qualified for a $500,000 new house free of charge, Said a computerized voice when I answered my phone. No thank you, I say, and I click the receiver. Brrrrinnnnnnggggg. Did you just hang up on me? A monotone computer voice asks me. Amazing! I hang up the phone. Brrrrinnnnnnggggg. The robotic voice says sternly, “I have reported you to the Technological Society. Police will be arriving.” What? I laugh and hang up. The officers are at my door in seconds. “Are you prejudiced against computers?” Officer Sternly asks me. No. “Did you hang up on one?” Yes. “Why?” The computer swore at me, I tell him. A total lie, but I doubt this is going any farther. So now the computers have more rights than I do in my own home? Just when I thought things could not get any more ridiculous! To add insult to injury, my sister-in-law got the free $500,000 house.
